Tian'an-men (literally, Gate of Heavenly Peace) Square is the symbol of the People's Republic of China, which is the central design of the national emblem. In the Yuan Dynasty the main southern gate of the capital Dadu was Lizheng Gate, which was the location of the today's Tian'an-men Gate. The square is 880 metres (2887 feet) south to north and 500 metres (1640 feet) east to west, a total area of 440,000 square metres (108.7 acres), which makes it the largest open-urban square in the world.
