The temple of Heaven has an area of 273 hectares, surrounded by a wall of about 5.5 kilometres long. It was a sacred place used by the emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties to "worship the heaven" and "pray for harvest". It was built in 1420 (the 18th year under the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty), originally named the temple of Heaven and Earth and subsequently named the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
